per Glenn W. Mayfield, James Jr. went with George Rogers Clark on theIllinois expedition. He served in the Evans Co. of Infantry of theIllinois Regiment under Lt. Col. John Montgomery from 6 January 1779 to13 July 1780, 18 months and 7 days, and was Hon. Discharged in IllinoisTerritory which was then Territory of Virginia. He swore allegiance tothe state of Virginia on 7 October 1777. Buried in Tennessee.

Abraham Lewis Mayfield was killed in action while fighting for thePatriots in the Virginia line during the American Revolution. Info foundin Virginia State Archives. He fought with Col. Crockett and Capt.Cherry. He served a a private, and then promoted to a captain and had acompany under his command when he was killed in the line of duty.
